Friedman described his platform focusing on education, insurance reform and a justice reform policy inspired by the imprisonment of a wrongfully convicted Lubbock man who died in prison.
Friedman said he would create the Timothy Cole Commission to establish guilt or innocence in honor of Cole, who was convicted of a rape he did not commit in 1986 and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Cole died of an asthma attack in 1999 while in prison, but was posthumously exonerated by a state judge earlier this year after DNA evidence cleared his name.

The court noted that the witness’s credibility was "fatally impeached by her ever-increasing number of self-admitted perjurious statements" and that, had the diary been available to defense attorneys, her "credibility would have not only been impeached, but severely undermined."
